Eco-roofs are more expensive than traditional roofs but they typically last twice as long. Because of the expense, eco-roofs are mostly used in commercial applications. Of course, there are other factors to consider, such as whether the building can safely support the extra weight of an eco-roof. Since green roofs are relatively new, many companies might not be experienced in their construction.
LS Landscaping does have experience in working with green roofs and can answer whatever questions you may have. If you are interested in developing a green roof for your commercial building, give us a call.
An eco-roof, sometimes called a green roof, is a vegetated roof system comprised of several layers, including a root barrier, waterproof membrane, drainage, soil system and plants. An eco-roof takes the place of a conventional roof and transforms your roof into a beautiful and functional space. Portland has always been in the forefront of the green movement so when developers and business owners across the country started looking for ways to reduce the negative impact on the Earth, Portland started offering incentives for qualifying eco-roofs.
Eco-roofs extend the life of your roof, adds insulation to the building (cutting energy costs), and creates a useable space from an otherwise wasted space. There are monetary benefits to qualifying eco-roofs in the Portland area. They qualify owners for city incentives, such as a discount on their municipal storm water fee and are a means to comply with the City’s Stormwater Management Manual that applies to all-new and redevelopment projects.
LS Landscaping argues that the real benefits can be seen in the positive impact they have on the environment. Creating a wildlife habitat for birds and insects is perhaps one of the biggest. The complete list of benefits is long and includes decreasing storm water runoff and erosion, reduces pollution by filtering air pollutants, saves energy by insulating the building-keeping it cool in the summer and warm in the winter, absorbs carbon dioxide and cools ambient air.
